The Handmaid's Tale (S1E1)

I first learned about this TV series,   The Handmaid's Tale ,  when I was browsing Youtube. I saw a channel was introducing this   series, and it caught my attention in a few seconds then I decided to put it on my "D rama List . " It is a new topic that is different from any other movies or TV series I'd seen before, therefore, it attracts me a lot. I  looked forward to it a fter knowing that it is  adapted from  a literature work. Eventually, I get the time and opportunity to watch it this weekend, and it didn't let me down.  It’s even better than my expectation. M y attention was captured by the opening scene when the family is running away from a group of armed men. It makes me want to figure out what are they hiding and why are they fear. Then the camera is pulled back to a small, tidy room with a woman sitting in the middle, narrating the background of the story and her certain situation.  She is now known as Offred, the Handmaid to Comman...

Energy and Nuclear Policy

Taiwan is facing the problem of power shortage so it is urgent for us to find a solution. Also, I believe that most of the country in the world have encountered the same problem now. So, we want to take a deep look at how people from other countries view the issue of power shortage and the use of nuclear power, and the possible solution we can think of. Therefore, my partner and I decided to conduct an interview about energy and nuclear policy.      The first question we ask in our interview is “Do you support the use of nuclear power?” We have received three positive answers from our Chinese and two American interviewees, while our Japanese and Malaysian interviewees don’t support it. Then we assume that the answer might have something to do with the land area and the population density of the country. So we ask them a follow-up question that if they got wider territory and land with no people live aside, will it influence their willingness to building ...

The Metamorphosis

This week I watched a documentary about the great book: The Metamorphosis, therefore, I want to talk about the relationships between Gregor and his family during his transformation.     First I want to introduce his mother. At first sight she saw Gregor turning into a bug, she was so shocked that she fainted. She does care about her son, but she just couldn’t help but shows her fear and disgust of the bug. But, she tries to show her sympathy toward Gregor when Grete refuses to let her see Gregor, she shouted and insist on meeting him as you can see in the quote. However, as Gregor has been losing his humanity gradually, she faints in terror once again. She becomes more bothered by him just like everyone else, and she gives up at the end and feels relief when Gregor is dead.     Then I’ll go on to Gregor’s father. A ctually, we can see that there isn’t much changed in Gregor’s relationship with his father throughout the story. He appears as an unk...

Finding Confidence

I think there're plenty of ways to make ourselves feel more confident.  I'll share my experience before.   When I was in junior high school, I couldn't score high in the math midterm.  My brain went blank at the moment the test paper was passed to me.  I found out, that was because I was too--nervous. I kept asking myself: what if there was a question I'd never seen before? What should I do? Then the result came out as you know, I had wrong answers on either the question I was unfamiliar with or the question I'd practice for thousands of times.   Then I turned to my teacher for help. She asked me to do a few things; first, close my eyes and take a deep breath before any test. Second, tell myself in mind that I studied hard for the test, so don't worry, I can do this. When meeting a difficult question, don't panic, calm down then I would find out it could be solved with the simplest concept.  I  tried it, and I got the highest grade in m...

Madame Bovary

I want to talk about how I view Emma in Madame Bovary and what I would do if I were her. A ccording to the theory of love, a consummate love requires three elements. And passion is the one lacks in Emma’s marriage. To be honest, I can understand why Emma contemplates adultery since during that era women got too many restrictions, they could only live their life at home and rely on their husbands. I couldn’t imagine how boring it could be to live that kind of life. Besides, people regard bourgeois women as the property of their fathers or husbands. By contemplating adultery, Emma not only feels the sense of being loved but also feels that she is an individual needed by others, which are very attracting to her. Although I pitied Emma for not having the life she wants and admire her courage for risking all for love, I still have to say that she treats Charles unfair. Emma despises Charles because he doesn’t fit her image of an ideal husband. She denies him only because o...

Dynasties

The documentary Dynasties  is worth-watching. The crew spent eight months  shooting  the story of Emperor Penguins at Atka Bay, showing us how penguins raise the next generation, take turns to look after their babies and cooperate with each other to get through the blizzard.  One of a memorable scene for me is when a huddle of penguin mothers are tumbled into a ravine in the ice with their baby penguins. Some mother penguins choose to abandon their chicks for saving themselves, while the others try to climb up with her beak and wings . We couldn't blame the former for making this  decision , but the latter is extremely admirable. I guess if I were the penguin mother, I wouldn’t give up until the last moment since I had done so much and finally give birth to a baby penguin. I couldn’t ruin all my effort without giving it a try. I am not sure whether penguins get emotions or not, but it’s the instinct that mothers are supposed to protect their babies. ...

The Incredibles2

When the sequel of The Incredibles released, I was in  ecstasy since I’ve been waiting for it for a long time. It was my childhood memory and one of my favorite cartoons.  Although cartoons may sound boring and childish,  they are always funny and relaxing. Besides, Disney’s movies always surprise people with their deeper meaning, and we can learn a lot from them. I got nervous when Helen is in the dilemma of saving the world and being with her family. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot, and I am also impressed by the amazing power of Jack-Jack and how he helps to stop the crime. However, I like the sequel of The Incredibles not only because it is interesting, but also it is educational. In this movie, it discusses the fairness of law and gender equality. It successfully raises everybody’s awareness of serious issues in an amusing way. One of the scenes I like the most is when Bob and Helen are arguing about the illegality of superpowers. Helen says that "wheth...

Dracula

Symbols in DRACULA     First, I want to talk about the three Weird Sisters Harker encounters in Dracula’s castle. As you can see in the quote, these women offer Harker more sexual satisfaction than his fiancée Mina does. They represent what the Victorian ideal women should not be. They symbolize both the dream and the nightmare of the Victorian male imagination in general, which threats the foundation of a male-dominated society by compromising men’s ability to reason and to maintain control.     Animals in this novel also carry a symbolic meaning.  Take Bats,  for example, they are active at night, and through flying allows them access to places Dracula might not otherwise be able to reach. Usually, characters are unaware of them or they aren’t worried about the bats at all. However, they eventually realize that Dracula has the ability to turn himself into a bat and that the bat has the capacity to eavesdrop. Therefore, Bats have a symbol of evil s...

Introverts VS Extrovert

That's  true, extroverts  are always active to persuade others to agree with their  ideas, which  make them be more influential in most  situation, so  that's why people notice extroverts  first, instead  of those introverts who own perfect idea or leadership.       I  have the same the problem  before, as  an  introvert, I  always volunteered to search for data and  organize the  powerpoint  of our  group rather than give a speech.  But I try to convey my ideas by inserting them to our group project and influence their thought subtly.   Frankly  speaking, I  was so envious of some people who can speak fluently and confidently. A ctually,  I was an extrovert when I was  little, I  have participated in many contests and feel free to have a  performance. However,  I became afraid to show myself in front of the public as I grew...

The Greatest Showman

During this four day holiday, I watched The Greatest Showman , a 2017 movie, for the third time. It was  an original musical about the story of  P.T. Barnum, who rose from nothing to  a huge success. However, I regarded it as a worth-watching movie not only because of the interesting story but also because I could get new feelings every time I re-watched it. For the first time I watched this movie, I was amazed by both the  magnificent scene and the  twists and turns of the plot. As for the second time, I focused more on the soundtrack   and the  beautiful-written lyrics. Some of the songs even became my favorite ones that I would play them  once in a while. This is me was a touching song which made me got goosebumps, while Rewrite the star astonished me by not only the romantic atmosphere but also the  marvelous  trapeze stunts. Nevertheless, I put more emphasis on the personality of each character when I watched it for the...
