I first learned about this TV series, The Handmaid's Tale, when I was browsing Youtube. I saw a channel was introducing this series, and it caught my attention in a few seconds then I decided to put it on my "Drama List." It is a new topic that is different from any other movies or TV series I'd seen before, therefore, it attracts me a lot. I looked forward to it after knowing that it is adapted from a literature work. Eventually, I get the time and opportunity to watch it this weekend, and it didn't let me down. It’s even better than my expectation. My attention was captured by the opening scene when the family is running away from a group of armed men. It makes me want to figure out what are they hiding and why are they fear. Then the camera is pulled back to a small, tidy room with a woman sitting in the middle, narrating the background of the story and her certain situation. She is now known as Offred, the Handmaid to Commander Fred Waterford. Women are suffering from so many unfair treatments under this regime: such as they aren't allowed to read and are only belongings of their husband. Even worse, women who can bear a child will be forced to become a handmaid and to bear a baby for those barren family. Severe punishment such as eye being plucked out or being banished to the colony will fall upon those who disobey the rule. In the beginning, Offred seems to be confused and have no choice to obey the rules, but deep inside her heart she still worried about her family, her young daughter, and her husband. After knowing that another handmaid also has the same feeling, Offred doesn't hesitate anymore, her eye is telling me that she is going to do something to make a change. At the end of this episode, Offred is sitting in the same room again, but this time, she restates her identity as June and she is going to fight to save her daughter. Therefore, I can't wait to know about what will happen next, and stories behind June and all the other characters.
The plot is not only tense but also thought-provoking, and it also raises the awareness of women and human rights. For those who haven't seen or don't know about this TV series, I strongly recommend you to take a look at this one.
